Backpacking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon - December 21-23, 2004

The swift-moving Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon averages 300 feet wide and 100 feet deep.

 

Ribbon Falls requires a 13-mile hike round trip from Phantom Ranch up the Bright Angel Creek side canyon.  The waterfall appears to be approximately 100 feet high. We scrambled up the trail up the bluff and ate lunch directly behind its mid-point.


Nearly 30 miles later...on the way up (and up and up and up)...
